ABSTRACT

A growing number of alternatives exists for individuals seeking alcoholism treatment. Because of increased levels of complexity and variety in the treatment delivery system (Nakao et al., 1986), individuals seek advice or recommendations concerning treatment from those persons or organizations they consider to be knowledgeable concerning treatment alternatives. These referral sources can be categorized into two basic groups: individual reference groups and organizational reference groups. The latter group includes employers, military and educational institutions. These referral sources and their role in the referral process are discussed in detail in the preceding article in this volume.
