ABSTRACT

Human service workers, by definition, have jobs that entail responsibility to people, and the stressors multiply as the needs of clients are assessed (Ivancevich and Matteson 1980). To the question “Why did you select the mental health profession as a career field?” the response is inevitably “the challenge to work with people rather than to shuffle paper.” However, coping with complex problems and diverse personality types, as well as filling out reams of forms, make stress the norm in this career.
