ABSTRACT
The older psychoanalytic approach developed by Freud emphasized the need for the therapist to maintain strict analytic neutrality. Kohut emphasized the importance of object relations in self psychology. The implication that Weiner and White draw, is that the therapist must actively empathize with the patient in order to improve the latter’s capacity for object relations.
