ABSTRACT
Merrill reminds us that the first step to treatment is diagnosis, and everything that the patient does or says is important information. Any form of uncooperativeness tells us something about the disorder that the patient has (and what kind of patient has that disorder). The tactic is to accept everything that the patient does or says in a spirit of inquiry rather than irritation, maintaining our perspectives as objective observers and not taking insults personally.
