ABSTRACT

Each of the TAT contributors, in addition to his interpretation of John Doe’s TAT and MAPS test protocol, compared the two tests by indicating the extent to which his TAT method was applicable to the MAPS test and by formulating general comparisons between the two tests. This chapter is devoted to these TAT-MAPS test comparisons. It is divided into two main sections: (I) the verbatim comments comparing the TAT and MAPS test; and (II) a discussion of all the various points of view indicated in the comments. The general purpose of this chapter is broader than that of merely presenting a priori comparisons between two thematic tests; it is, rather, to stimulate individuals to work experimentally on the broad problem implicit in this particular inter-test comparison; viz., what effects do various degrees of structurization in the stimulus material have upon the resultant thematic fantasy productions. Scientific meaning can be given to the different functions of these two (and other) tests only through properly designed experimental research.
