ABSTRACT

The Festucoideae contain the main cool-season turfgrasses, such as the fescues and bluegrasses, while the Eragrostoideae and Panicoideae contain examples of the main warm-season turfgrasses, such as the Bermudagrasses, and Queensland blue couch. The vegetative plant parts of a grass given here are essential to an understanding of the family and to the use of keys for identification. Bermudagrass is of lesser importance in cooler regions, however natural selection and the development of naturally winter-hardy varieties, have extended their range. Found in coastal, tablelands and slopes of eastern Australia, and waste places in North and South Island of New Zealand where it is used primarily for hay and pasture purposes. Indigenous to Australia, particularly Western Australia, Queensland, and northern New South Wales, and has been reviewed by Webster. Several selections of St. Augustine grass, such as Floratine, Bitter Blue and Floratam, are available from the United States (US).
