ABSTRACT
The article attempts an analysis of the nature of plantation enterprises in colonial India. The focus is on the nature of capital-labour relations in the plantations, the 298methods of mobilisation and control of labour, the production and reproduction of labour power and the process of proletarianisation. It argues that capital-labour relations were marked by unfreedom, which is analysed with reference to class struggle.
