ABSTRACT

The creation of large man-made lakes in Africa has been responsible for the relocation of large numbers of people, including some 50,000 people displaced by the Kariba Dam, over 70,000 people by the Volta Dam, and over 100,000 by the Aswan High Dam. In Nigeria the lake that will form in 1968 behind Kainji Dam will displace another 50,000 people. With further dams planned for all of Africa's major river systems, this is just a beginning.
