ABSTRACT

This contribution was developed as part of a Dutch WOTRO Integrated Programme which is coordinated by Dr. M.J. Spierenburg and goes by the name ‘Farm dwellers, the forgotten people? consequences of conversions to private wildlife production in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape’. An earlier version of this contribution was presented at the ‘NatureTM Inc? questioning the market panacea in environmental policy and conservation’ conference in The Hague (2011). I wish to thank all participants for their comments, as well as the special issue authors and anonymous reviewers for commentary on earlier drafts.
