ABSTRACT

Many factors affect the ageing process and the ways in which society responds to the aged. Culture includes the beliefs, values and norms transmitted to people within a society. Passed on through generations, cultural ties and belief systems are important forces in shaping behaviours. As such, cultural norms are primary influences on social interactions and relationships as they dictate proper role behaviours and subsequent expectations. Individuals growing up in society are acculturated to the expectations of those around them.
