ABSTRACT
Too often, simplistic answers to perceived environmental issues are provided from single and narrow perspectives. Our understanding of these issues rests partly on detailed and specialized research carried out within a single discipline or subdiscipline in universities and research establishments. The problem arises when we allow ourselves to believe that this is the only source of understanding. Environmental issues are by definition also social ones, and therefore our understanding must rest upon broader interdisciplinary perspectives that transcend institutional and professional barriers.
