ABSTRACT

Counselling in Britain is now well established. This is reflected in the twofold increase in membership of the British Association for Counselling since 1991. At the time of writing this chapter, the association has over 14,000 individual and 822 organizational members. As with other professions, counselling is under increased public scrutiny and criticism. The need to maintain high standards is therefore essential and to this end the British Association for Counselling is involved in the development of the United Kingdom Register of Counsellors. The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy ( UKCP) introduced a National Register of Psychotherapists in 1992. In addition the National Advice and Guidance, Counselling and Psychotherapy Lead Body is in the process of developing National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in counselling.
