ABSTRACT

This is a description of the first stages of an action research project aimed at developing teaching strategies with Year 4 pupils, in order to develop their understanding and awareness of art as communication. My class was working on a communications project and we began to consider what artists might be communicating in their work. Learning that ideas, feelings, and meaning are communicated through art, and how this is done, was intended to complement the study and use of other means of communication. To this end, I chose to test out some new teaching strategies that might help my class to learn about the content and meaning of art. To assess the effectiveness of the strategies for conveying that idea I recorded what we did, and my impressions of the children’s responses.
