ABSTRACT

As an art co-ordinator in a primary school, I am very interested in the expectation that even the youngest children should apply knowledge of the work of other artists to their own work. This study of reception children’s responses to a visit to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts focuses on the way children responded to the work of other artists. There is little evidence of young children (and their teachers) undertaking work of this kind. My findings were shared with colleagues in order to help them to develop this aspect of art education.
