ABSTRACT
Traditional communities in Brazil provide many examples of community-level natural resource management which is ecologically sound and economically feasible. These management systems reflect an essential pattern in the relationship between traditional human communities and their environment. Many of the techniques and approaches used are based on a deep knowledge of the environment, and on a tradition in which community livelihood derives from the sustainable use of natural resources.
