ABSTRACT

Ramakrishna Mission (RKM) was established in 1897 by the Swami Vivekananda with its headquarters in Howrah, near Calcutta. Although initially a religious organization, RKM has developed a number of welfare and developmental activities since the early 1950s. It became, for instance, India’s first adult education centre in 1952, and now has programmes in education, health, relief and rehabilitation, publication and integrated development. RKM now has 167 branches in various countries, with 93 in India alone. RKM, Narendrapur, is notable for both its size and the wide range of activities it undertakes.
