ABSTRACT

Three distinct types of initiatives taken by government to collaborate with NGOs in the broad sphere of agricultural technology development can be identified:

efforts to involve NGOs into schemes designed by task forces for watershed management

efforts under the Eighth Five-Year Plan to hand over a range of extension functions to NGOs in specific geographical areas

the creation of farm science centres (Krishi Vignan Kendras – KVKs) by the Indian Council for Agricultural Research at the field sites where selected NGOs operate.

In what follows, summaries are presented of proposals under the first two initiatives (since activities have not yet started) and three brief case studies are presented of activities to date under the third.
