ABSTRACT

Agroforestry here is defined as a land-use system which intentionally combines annual agricultural crops with trees or shrubs and/or livestock within the same land management unit to achieve diversified, increased production. The purpose of the present survey was to learn of the activities, successes, constraints and needs of NGOs actively engaged in agroforestry and related fields. While Nepal contains a plethora of forestry and agroforestry projects sponsored by HMG in collaboration with bilateral and multilateral donors, the activities of smaller, independent organizations are largely unrecognized in the development community. As forestry development turns increasingly to the concept of working through user groups to establish and protect forest resources, it becomes imperative to examine the experiences of those projects which have combined integrated approaches with a commitment to community participatory development to involve users of resources.
