ABSTRACT
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines is working towards the sustainable development of natural resources. Its research arm, the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB), conducts research on the major ecosystems. The DENR’s integrated social forestry programme (ISFP) is part of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Programme (CARP). CARP’s objective is to promote social justice and sustainable rural development through an equitable system of land-ownership and distribution. The ISFP is aimed at increasing rural income in upland areas while safeguarding the environment. The ERDB is implementing the joint CARP–ISFP research and development programme.
