ABSTRACT

Indonesia is a country consisting of 13,677 islands containing a diversity of cultural groups practising four formally recognized religions. The per capita GNP was US$530 in 1990, with 23 per cent contributed by agriculture, 37 per cent by industry and 17 per cent by the manufacturing sector. In 1989–90 aid receipts constituted 2.1 per cent of GDP and the total external debt was 66.4 per cent of GDP. Despite the growth of industry, 54.4 per cent of the labour force still works in agriculture. Life expectancy stands at 61. The daily calorific intake in 1988 was 2,670. Secondary school enrolment in 1985 was 41 per cent.
