ABSTRACT

Pat Mora's Stubborn Woman evokes several of the themes our authors have developed as they explored the geographies of women over the life course. Her mobility is clearly affected by her stage of life — at eighty she is no longer agile. As a woman, she keeps an eye out for ‘the safe route’ while undertaking a shopping trip; that she is walking probably indicates her class and cohort. Yet she perseveres, fully aware that her autonomy and mobility are interconnected, and she maintains the desire of her earlier years for the small luxuries that enhance the image of her body.
