The legacies of the past shape societies today. ‘Saturday in Kingston’, by the Jamaican writer Andrew Salkey reflects the historical role of slavery and the plantation economy on present gender, ethnic and labour relations. In the Caribbean, the shadows of previous systems, governments and people have been cast largely since the fifteenth century albeit within the penumbra of remaining real and imagined links to indigenous communities who inhabited the territories before European invasion.
