ABSTRACT

A ‘global ecological crisis’ is a crisis the causes of which are diffuse and the effects of which are universal. From the economic point of view, a global crisis is much different from local crises. In local crises … local agents are usually directly accountable for damages to local victims … we are dealing with a … ‘stabilized universe’, where people agree upon basic goals, duties and rights. By contrast in the global ecological crisis, the ‘culprit’ may be nothing less than the model of development encompassing whole continents and ‘victims’ may be on other continents with other styles of living. We are in a controversial universe involving debates about national models and international justice.
