ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide sufficient background information to enable readers to assess for themselves the control that geology has on both the natural landscape and human activities within the Mediterranean Basin. It is therefore selective in its treatment and cannot include detailed studies of individual areas. Instead, it synthesises and demonstrates the importance of the unique features of Mediterranean geology. To do this, it summarises the major works on Mediterranean geology, further reference to which should allow the specialist reader to enquire into any specific subject area.
