ABSTRACT
The Ottoman empire in Europe reached its limit with the failure to takeVienna in 1683 and the ensuing treaty of Carlowitz (1699) which marked the beginning of a long and convulsive recession leaving it with little more in Europe than the city of Istanbul. Strategically, however, Turkey in the twentieth century had potentially a role as a link between Europe and a renascent Arab world.
