ABSTRACT
This chapter surveys current debates and trends in development thinking, policy and teaching, and seeks to provoke further debate. It offers insights into some of the dramatic paradigm shifts of the last two decades, reflecting in part my own recent rethinking of the potential relevance to the South or Third World of concepts of postmodernism and postcolonialism (see Simon 1998).
