ABSTRACT

There are obviously many books on Germany and German society in general. One recent survey is Peter James (ed.), Modern Germany. Politics, society and culture (Roudedge, 1998). It includes chapters on education, training and the workplace, the media and the cultural landscape. Stuart Parkes, Understanding Contemporary Germany (Roudedge, 1997) also deals with a number of social issues relevant to this chapter, as does John Ardagh, Germany and the Germans (Penguin, 3rd edn, 1995). Of texts in German the following can be recommended: Fritz R. Glunk, Der gemittele Deutsche (dtv, 1996), which covers many of the areas discussed in this chapter and is very easy to read; Martin and Sylvia Greiffenhagen, Ein schwieriges Vaterland (List, 1993), which covers such social themes as class, religion and the position of women; Bernhard Schäfers, Gesellschaftlicher Wandel in Deutschland (Enke, 6th edn, 1995), which deals with questions of population, marriage and the family, education and social structure. An invaluable source of accessible statistical material is provided by the annual Datenreport published by the Bundes zentrale für politische Bildung in Bonn.
