ABSTRACT

The discussion on ecological footprints in Chapter 2 turns primarily on waste and energy usage. Overall, for every tonne of consumer product, 11 tonnes of waste materials is generated. It is no wonder that wastes in general have become the prime source of attention amongst regulators, economists bent on ecotaxation and tradable permits, and risk assessors. This chapter is connected to the lively debate on rucksacks (Chapter 2), on economic instruments (Chapter 4) and on risk management (previous chapter).
