ABSTRACT
Welcome to Unit 2! Science is great fun and a very important subject in building. This unit is about understanding the science of materials used in building. Without materials, buildings obviously do not exist. To make safe, reliable, long-lasting buildings it is important to use the correct materials. Clearly, the properties of the materials must be learned and understood. In the modern world there are many different types of materials to use: timber, concrete, plastics, clay products, and as we shall see, many others. It is easy to select the right materials if the appropriate properties are known.
