ABSTRACT

This unit introduces the principles and practices of the construction process applied to low-rise buildings. The unit encourages consideration of the relationships between the function of a building and its structural form, together with how the internal division of space is achieved. Throughout there is an emphasis on the performance of the building and its many parts. Attention is then drawn to the provision and installation of building services which contribute towards the maintenance, health, comfort and convenience of the building user. Finally the unit considers some of the basic operations associated with the external works for a residential development. Throughout the unit there is emphasis on the application of the various health and safety legislation, regulations and British Standards. This unit uses these themes to introduce the reader to:
