ABSTRACT

The project described in this chapter set out to explore what happens to food choices within the family when one member unilaterally decides to change their diet. If one member of a family decides to become a vegetarian how do others react? If the change in diet requires extra shopping and cooking, who does it? Who in the family takes responsibility for ensuring the person who changes their diet is eating a nutritionally adequate diet? By focusing on the social ramifications of a change in diet, the project addresses the complex role that food plays in the family context, both in terms of responsibility for the practical tasks associated with the acquisition and preparation of food and in terms of the social functions that food performs.
