ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the linguistic aspects of quantification in non-native production data. Special emphasis is laid on the potential of automatic and quantitative analysis to reveal features of non-nativeness and to pave the way for more qualitative analysis. One frequently-cited advantage of corpus linguistics is that it makes it possible to conduct large-scale and accurate quantitative analyses that have not previously been feasible. Semantic tagging is at a very early stage of development, researchers are carrying out a great deal of interesting work. Error tagging is currently a manual process and therefore very time-consuming. The automatic flagging of errors would greatly facilitate the error annotation of learner corpora. Work on tagged corpora is much more informative and precise than work carried out on raw corpora. Using text retrieval programs on Part-of-speech (POS) tagged corpora enhances the power of grammatical analysis a great deal.
