ABSTRACT

Joe W eston’s In troduction and Peter Bulleid’s open ing chap ter have dem onstrated tha t the n eed for a num ber of individual specialists to take part in EIA is apparen t from the beginning of a project. In some cases, there will only be one o r two topics requiring analysis as p art o f the EIA; m ore often in my experience, there will be at least four. Usually, there is a need for one or m ore o f the many engineering disciplines such as transport p lanning or geotechnics. Any schem e involving unbu ilt land (w hether in town or not) will usually require an ecological assessment, and alm ost all will require an archaeological investigation. These are perhaps the m ost typical requirem ents of an EIA for new developm ents, bu t m any also involve m uch m ore specialist analysis, especially w here com plex or in terre la ted effects need to be addressed.
