ABSTRACT

This chapter is written from the standpoint of researchers using spoken corpora who believe strongly in the value of having the acoustic as well as the textual data in machine-readable form. Having this information allows a number of interesting areas to be explored, as we will explain in the context of the research being done on a joint research project shared between Peter Roach and Gerry Knowles (MARSEC: MAchine-Readable Spoken English Corpus, funded by Economic and Social Research Council Grant No. R000 23 3380).
