ABSTRACT
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the scope and coverage of the Text Encoding Initiative’s Recommendations for Text Encoding for Interchange, as published during 1993. Its origins in academic research have made the TEI scheme particularly flexible, involving innovative uses of Standard Generalized Mark-up Language (SGML) and an ambitious modular approach to dtd development. The recommendations for the encoding of spoken language constitute one important instance of this general approach.
