ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that further research into the possibilities for beneficial association of Language Awareness with foreign language learning would be valuable and should be carried out soon. It has been necessary for the development of Language Awareness work to bring together knowledge and expertise gained in the fields of linguistics, psychology, sociology, education, English, foreign and second languages. Statements made about the importance of knowledge about language in the Cox Report and the importance of Language Awareness for foreign languages in the DES document lend weight to the view that this should be pursued. A word should be said about initial teacher training courses. A comparison of the number of hours available to train students for Teaching Practice (TP) on Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses with those, for example, on EFL courses at International House shows this up.
