ABSTRACT

The chapter thinks occasional computer activities can be tremendously useful either in a thorough-going awareness course or as awareness activities interspersed in a course primarily devoted to developing actual language competence and performance. Many of them offer great opportunities for learner-centred inductive learning, or at least self-paced learning. Clearly, no claims can be made that computer work will take over the field of Language Awareness heightening. As yet the language topics for which useful computer-related activities are available are scattered, and the activities usually depend heavily on teacher involvement either in prior preparation or in monitoring and follow-up. The author is only too aware that he has only touched on the range of computer-aided Language Awareness heightening activities that his audience may have developed or come across. In fact almost every Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) program the author have come across and discussed with teachers doing applied linguistics MAs raises some criticisms of a linguistic nature.
