ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by providing a brief indication as to why it is of use to urban and regional scientists to be able to obtain indicators of output, costs, profitability and investment at the local and regional level. The chapter then reviews the information currently available on these key variables in the UK from both government and identified private-sector sources. The chapter concludes by describing how the researcher might make the best of what is available using a methodology which can help to pull together disparate information sources and derive estimates for geographical variations in profits.
