ABSTRACT
Nigeria and South Africa both constitute middle-ranking powers. Their foreign policies have little global consequence, but closer to home these states have a considerable influence. This chapter considers these two states within their regional settings – respectively west and southern Africa. It also takes a broader view of the continental setting and the domestic economic and political conditions which have affected the foreign policies of African states, Nigeria and South Africa included.
