ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The decision to produce a new series of regional volumes for the Developing Areas Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers was based on the view that the dramatic changes in the global political economy. Eastern and southern Africa is by far the worst affected regions in the world, with many countries in the southern part of the continent experiencing adult HIV infection. The book that provides the most direct discussion of the AIDS crisis which is the region's most severe developmental and humanitarian problem. Colin Stoneman provides a robust and damning critique of structural adjustment policies in the region from a development economist's perspective. The book focuses on development theory and development debates. In terms of development debates, the countries of southern and eastern Africa have experienced a wide range of new approaches to development as donor country.
