ABSTRACT

Arson can be defined as the act of intentionally and maliciously setting fire to buildings, private or public properties, woodland areas or vehicles, with the intent to cause damage. Sanctions against arsonists take the problem extremely seriously given the risk to life as well as damage to property. Arson is prosecuted with attention to the degree of severity of the alleged offence. In the United States, first-degree arson generally occurs when individuals are harmed or killed in the course of the fire, and second-degree arson when significant destruction of property occurs. Usually a felony (serious crime), arson may also be prosecuted as a misdemeanour, criminal mischief or the destruction of property.
