ABSTRACT

The emergence of Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) has been a fast-growing trend over the past few years, receiving both high acclaim and criticism with respect to how it will change the education landscape. As many areas of society have undergone rapid changes enabled by technology, the education sector has been by comparison in a dormant state for some time. Thus, it was inevitable that technology enthusiasts and experimenters would create something like MOOCs and use technology to open up new educational possibilities. Even though MOOCs may not live up to all of the initial hype that accompanied them, and we are still trying to figure out the best way to use them, there is no doubt that they are an important new innovation with the potential to have a large impact. For this reason, I thought it would be a good time to edit a book about MOOCs that covers various aspects of the MOOC phenomenon that are not discussed in depth.
