ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses different aspects intertwined in the 'food-energy-water' nexus. It explains sustainable use of water and energy resources to meet the growing food security and agricultural growth challenges in the developing world. The book illustrates through case study how efficient management of energy economy through efficient pricing and rational supply policies for energy promotes efficient and sustainable water management. It shows how global concepts have been misused to create illusions about the heightened role of irrigation and energy security in promoting agricultural development and food security in certain water-rich regions of the world in order to support pervasive policies of subsidizing electricity. The book identifies the gap in the current hydropower development program in the northeast that are currently preventing the program from being an ecologically sustainable, socially just and economically viable solution to meeting India's growing energy demand.
