ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book explains very personal accounts of auto/biographical narrative work, to considering, more explicitly, the interplay of the personal and political, as well as the role of narrative in facilitating political agency or, negatively, why the stories of fundamentalism, in conditions of bewildering change, appear seductive. It considers the role of the narrators in reading the text, noting that interpretation is always an intersubjective as well as experientially shaped process. The book also considers the nature and role of narrative in particular professional contexts, such as careers work. It examines the role, meaning and significance of narrative in letter writing, and how this can be crucial in building resilience, in wartime, through expressions of love and sharing everyday normality. The book ends with what the authors term an 'afterword', summarising the role and nature of narrative and of narrative enquiry and its transdisciplinary and transgressive claims.
