ABSTRACT

This chapter has presented a brief introduction to research exploring respondents' life stories with respect to engagement with the UK Global Justice Movement. It explores some factors which may serve to discourage people from taking action. The chapter then introduces a range of concepts used in analysing respondents' narratives: a framework for exploring forms of engagement; Social Identity Theory (SIT), concerned with group membership; Identity Theory (IT), exploring roles played; and Narrative Identity (NI), built on the premise that people construct identities by 'locating themselves or being located within a repertoire of emplotted stories'. It argues that the insights provided by IT, concerning roles, and SIT, concerning group memberships, can be incorporated into the framework provided by NI, grounding this research within the field of narrative analysis. The chapter presents a brief introduction to research exploring respondents' life stories with respect to engagement with the UK Global Justice Movement.
