ABSTRACT

WWViews on Biodiversity was the second-ever global citizen consultation. It engaged approximately 3,000 citizens in 25 countries in deliberations about some of the core issues in the on-going, international discussions and negotiations about how to stop the decline in biodiversity. Building on experiences from WWViews on Global Warming in 2009 (Bedsted et al., 2012), WWViews on Biodiversity had a different starting point, a slightly altered design, and more promising implications for the future. In this chapter we will explain the motivation and context for initiating WWViews, the reasons for the methodological alterations made, our experiences with coordinating a citizen consultation process in a global governance context, and perspectives for the future uses of the method at global and other levels of governance.
