ABSTRACT

A new generation of Chinese architects has emerged in the last two decades. Unlike the anonymous collective production in the past, Chinese architects nowadays enjoy more freedom of individual expression, as represented by Yung Ho Chang, Liu Jiakun, and Wang Shu. The establishment of independent practice enabled these architects to assert their design authorship. Despite their different design trajectories, they share a family resemblance of salient features in terms of their conceptual studies, tectonic expression, use of tradition, and social awareness. This chapter provides a historical and formal study of this generation with a focus on Chang, Liu, and Wang.
