ABSTRACT

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the process of urbanization has been deeply entangled with state politics, national economy, and social institutions. Based on a comprehensive observation of China’s urbanization, this chapter focuses on critical developments post-1978 in China’s Reform and Opening-up. It traces the trajectories and analyzes the problems encountered in the process; it then uses the city of Nanjing as a case to detail these problems in concrete contexts and conditions. This chapter ends with an exploration of pathways for addressing these concerns in the light of a recently proposed “new urbanization” program.
