ABSTRACT
Newspaper coverage of the tragic death of Jean Charles de Menezes (mistakenly identified as a terrorist) in London in July 2005 brought back into circulation a term first coined in 1896 – namely, ‘dum-dum bullet’. 1 In this case the term was being used in its loosest sense, but the articles noted here are correct in stating that this type of ammunition is outlawed for military purposes.
