ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a subset of the findings and recommendations from the Evidence synthesis. It highlights findings about the impact of family engagement on the achievement of students placed at risk due to circumstances such as poverty and lack of access to community resources. Despite the relationship between achievement and family resources, Clark found that high-achieving students came from a wide variety of family backgrounds. Pena found that parent involvement was influenced by several factors: language, parent cliques, parents' educational level, and attitudes of school staff, cultural influences, and family issues such as childcare. J. L. Simon studied predictors of high school and family partnerships and the influence of these partnerships on student success. The continuity of family involvement at home appears to have a protective effect on children as they move through school. The chapter concludes with recommendations for putting the findings into action.
